The Golden Hind was an English galleon commanded by the privateer and explorer Sir Francis Drake, most famous for carrying Drake on his circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, only the second such voyage in history after Ferdinand Magellans expedition. The ship was originally launched under the name Pelican and was renamed mid-voyage by Drake in honor of Sir Christopher Hatton, whose family crest featured a golden hind, a female red deer. Along the way the voyage raided Spanish shipping and territory in the Pacific, and Drake returned to England with substantial plundered treasure; the original ship was later broken up, and a full-size seaworthy replica is now displayed on the River Thames in London.
