Gloster Javelin

Military Aircraft

The Gloster Javelin was a twin-engined, all-weather interceptor designed and produced by Gloster, and the last aircraft to carry the Gloster name. It was a two-seat, T-tailed delta-wing night and all-weather fighter built to Air Ministry specification F.44/46 and powered by two Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire turbojets. After a protracted development it entered squadron service in 1956 and later received upgrades to its engines, radar and weapons, including the de Havilland Firestreak air-to-air missile. The Javelin served with the Royal Air Force from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s, and the last examples were withdrawn from operational service in 1968 as the English Electric Lightning replaced them.
