A gig is a light two wheeled carriage built for one horse and typically one or two occupants, popular in Britain from the eighteenth century into the nineteenth as a fast, simple alternative to heavier four wheeled carriages. Its light construction made it inexpensive to buy and easy on a single horse, and it was widely used by country doctors, clergy and tradesmen who needed to travel quickly between calls rather than ride in comfort over long distances.
