GE UM12C

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The UM12C is a type of diesel-electric locomotive that GE manufactured for Southeast Asian rail operators. It was bought by the Manila Railroad Company, which introduced twenty road switcher units as its 2000 class in 1956, and later run by the Philippine National Railways until 1999. Those units had a shovelnose layout and a single-ended cowl cab, among the first locomotives to use the cowl unit design. The State Railway of Thailand bought 50 meter gauge double-ended, cab-forward versions, and as of 2015 45 remained in service. The Philippine units were replaced on passenger services by a newer GE Universal Series type.
