The GE U36B is a four-axle, 3,600 horsepower B-B diesel-electric locomotive that General Electric produced from 1969 to 1974. Seaboard Coast Line Railroad ordered 108 and the Auto-Train Corporation 17, for a total run of 125, and thirteen of them powered the original Auto Train. It was the most powerful four-axle Universal Series model and the last high-horsepower design of that series, built around improvements to the 16-cylinder FDL-16 prime mover and visually identical to the U33B. Railroads moved away from such designs because of fuel prices, maintenance costs and poor wheel adhesion. The only known survivor is CSX number 7764, formerly Seaboard Coast Line 1776, at the Lake Shore Railway Museum in Pennsylvania.
