GE U28CG

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE U28CG was a dual-service diesel-electric locomotive that GE Transportation Systems produced in 1966, derived from its freight-hauling U28C. The only customer was the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which ordered ten early that year for delivery in July and August. At the time no North American builder offered a dedicated passenger locomotive, only steam-generator versions of freight road switchers, and Santa Fe needed replacements for its aging F units quickly. GE offered a shorter waiting list and better trade-in deals for old Alcos. The ten units, numbered 350 to 359, wore a Warbonnet silver and red scheme, with a bulge in the hood for a Vapor-Clarkson steam generator.
