GE U26C

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE U26C is a diesel locomotive that GE Transportation Systems introduced in 1971 as a narrow-gauge version of the U23C. Every example is a six-axle unit with a C-C wheel arrangement. They were built for metre gauge networks in Brazil and Kenya and for 3 foot 6 inch gauge networks in New Zealand and South Africa, all rated at 2,050 kilowatts as built except the Kenyan units, which were derated to 1,950. A turbocharged V12 four-stroke diesel engine sits under a long hood with a single cab at one end, in the hood unit road switcher layout typical of North American diesels. A more powerful version license-built by Krupp, referred to as a U30C, went to the TAZARA Railway.
