GE U25C

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE U25C is a six-axle diesel locomotive that General Electric built for the United States domestic market. It was launched in September 1963 and stayed in production until December 1965, when the U28C replaced it. The design began with the need for six-axle power on a 12-mile heavy haul railroad used to build Oroville Dam, and GE based it heavily on the U25B, lengthening it by four feet four inches to fit the improved Trimount trucks. It was the first six-axle unit of the second generation of dieselization. Production ran in three phases that differed in fuel tank size and carbody details, and ten units were later uprated to 2,750 or 2,800 horsepower. Only one U25C survives, Lake Superior and Ishpeming number 2501 in Marquette, Michigan.
