GE U23B

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE U23B is a 2,250 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive that GE Transportation built from 1968 to 1977. It was one of the most successful models of the Universal Series, with 481 units built, 16 of them exported to Peru. It was a derivative of the U30B with a lower power rating, 2,250 horsepower against 3,000, and it used a 12-cylinder FDL engine. A six-axle variant was produced as the U23C. The B23-7 replaced it. A few shortline and regional railroads still run U23Bs, and examples are kept at the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum and the Railroad Museum of New England, where the last U23B built is in regular freight and excursion service.
