GE Dash 9-40CW

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE Dash 9-40CW is a 4,000 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania, between January 1996 and December 2004. Of the 1,090 built for Norfolk Southern, road numbers 8889 to 9978, and 53 Dash 8-44CWs built to Dash 9 specifications went to CSX. Part of the Dash 9 series, it shares its frame, HiAd trucks, 16-cylinder 7FDL engine and traction motors with the Dash 9-44CW, but software in the engine governing unit restricts output to 4,000 horsepower to prolong engine life and save fuel, and the engineer can override it. In 2005 GE replaced it in its catalog with the Evolution Series ES40DC, and Norfolk Southern began rebuilding units as AC44C6Ms in 2015.
