GE Dash 8-40CW

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE Dash 8-40CW, often called the C40-8W, is a six-axle diesel-electric freight locomotive that GE Transportation Systems built from 1989 to 1994. It belongs to the Dash 8 Series and differs from the earlier Dash 8-40C by its newer wide or safety cab. The first unit, number 9356, was built for Union Pacific in December 1989, and GE built 756 in all before the Dash 9-44CW succeeded it in 1994. A 4,000 horsepower V16 7FDL diesel engine drives a main alternator that feeds six traction motors, giving a top speed of 70 miles per hour. Later Conrail units gained split cooling and electronic displays. A cowl-bodied Canadian version was the Dash 8-40CM.
