GE Dash 8-40C

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE Dash 8-40C, also written C40-8, is a six-axle diesel-electric freight locomotive that GE Transportation Systems built between 1987 and 1992. It is part of the Dash 8 Series and has a C-C wheel arrangement. Dash 8 in general names the electrical control series, and the 40 refers to the baseline rating of 4,000 horsepower, although some units were re-rated to 4,100. Later units with a wide-nose cab are designated Dash 8-40CW. Some railroads, notably the Chicago and North Western, upgraded units to about 4,135 horsepower and called them C42-8, a designation Union Pacific later changed to C41-8 after taking over the railroad in 1995.
