GE Dash 8-32BWH

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE Dash 8-32BWH, also known as the P32-8BWH, B32-8WH or P32-8, is a diesel-electric locomotive used by Amtrak in passenger service and based on the GE Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives. Twenty were delivered to Amtrak in 1991, numbered 500 to 519, as the first locomotives bought to replace the EMD F40PH, and two were funded by the California Department of Transportation. GE built them as a modification of the Dash 8-32B with head-end power, a comfort cab and changes to meet Amtrak weight and performance needs. A 7FDL V12 diesel engine produces 3,200 horsepower, and the maximum speed in passenger service is 103 miles per hour. As of 2023, 16 of the original 20 remained in service.
