GE B36-7

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE B36-7 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive that GE Transportation Systems built between January 1980 and September 1985 as a successor to the U36B. In all 230 were built, 222 for North American railroads and eight for a Colombian coal mining operation, and 180 of them went to Seaboard System Railroad and Conrail. It was developed from the B30-7 and looks identical to it. The first four, for the Cotton Belt, were modified B30-7s with GE Sentry Adhesion System wheel slip detection, a new traction motor and a new alternator. Units were first rated at 3,600 horsepower and later at 3,750, and they were designed for fast, priority intermodal and container service. Production ended with a final unit for Seaboard.
