GE B30-7

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE B30-7 is a diesel-electric locomotive that GE produced from 1977 to 1983 as part of its Dash 7 Series. It has a 16-cylinder engine producing 3,000 horsepower and was GE's successor to the U30B. A total of 399 units were produced, including 120 cabless B30-7A units, which were built only for Burlington Northern. It was designed from the B23-7 and looked nearly identical, but with 3,000 horsepower against 2,300. After a June 1980 experiment that uprated the 12-cylinder engine to 3,000 horsepower, most later units used the cheaper 12-cylinder engine. Chesapeake and Ohio number 8272 is preserved at the Lake Shore Railway Museum in North East, Pennsylvania.
