GE 80-ton switcher

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE 80-ton switcher is a diesel-electric B-B locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems for industrial and light switching around railheads and ports. From 1936 to 1973 hundreds were produced for civilian use, including for industrial railroads across the United States, several dozen for Canada and exports to countries such as Belgium, Brazil, Chile, India, Italy, Mexico and Venezuela. The United States Armed Forces bought many from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1953, and in the 1990s Tooele Army Depot rebuilt most with Cummins turbocharged 470 horsepower six-cylinder engines. Fewer than 27 Army and 5 Air Force units remain in service, and at least ten work in tourist service.
