GE 25-ton switcher

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The GE 25-ton switcher, also called the 25-tonner, is a diesel-electric switcher locomotive that GE Transportation produced at its Erie, Pennsylvania, plant between 1941 and 1974. Most were built for industrial customers or the United States Armed Forces, though some freight railroads bought them, and export models went to buyers on five continents. About 550 were built over 33 years, making it one of the most widely produced switchers in American history. Its small size, 20 miles per hour top speed and 150 horsepower made it suitable only for switching, and GE marketed it as a low-cost industrial switcher. A 6-cylinder Cummins diesel engine powered it, and many are preserved.
