The Focke-Wulf Fw 61 was a German helicopter first flown in 1936, built by Focke-Wulf under a design later carried on as Focke-Achgelis. It is recognized as the first successful, practical and fully controllable helicopter, using twin side by side rotors to achieve stable, sustained flight years before helicopter designs elsewhere matured, and its flights set early altitude, speed and duration records for rotorcraft.
