Fiat 727

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Fiat 727 was a medium half-track artillery tractor built by the Italian maker Fiat V.I. for the Royal Italian Army in the Second World War. Italy had paid little attention to half-tracks between the wars, but after evaluating a German Sd.Kfz. 7 in 1941 both Fiat and Breda bought a licence for its Krauss-Maffei tracked running gear, Breda building the Breda 61 and Fiat the smaller 727 with a less powerful engine, for which it received an order of 100. The armistice of 8 September 1943 cancelled the rest of the order after Fiat had delivered its first lot of eight. The running gear had seven partly overlapping road wheels, four single and three double, plus a front drive wheel; the engine was a six cylinder in-line petrol Fiat of 4,170 cubic centimetres that drove the rear tracks and a 2.5 tonne winch. The open cab seated the driver, a section chief and six gunners, and the tractor was meant to tow loads of 6 tonnes.
