The Fiat 680 N truck represented the first innovation in the world of heavy transport after the war for Fiat Veicoli Industriali. It replaced the Fiat 666 N and was produced from 1949 to 1952. It was equipped with a six cylinder diesel engine of 10,170 cubic centimetres with four valves per cylinder, giving a maximum of 123 horsepower. The cab, although rounded, was less austere than its predecessor's. The gearbox had a reduction for each gear, four normal and four reduced with two reverses, with the reduction lever near the steering wheel. It was built in 4x2 and 6x2 versions, the latter with a third axle added by a specialist bodybuilder, since Fiat never produced the added steering third axle itself. Fiat also made lengthened chassis with this engine for coachbuilders such as Viberti of Turin, who made the 680 RN and 680 RNU buses.
