Fiat 656F

Buses and Road Mass Transit Vehicles

The Fiat 656F is a model of trolleybus made by the Italian maker Fiat V.I. SpA between 1940 and 1949, with a body by Casaro or Varesine. It succeeded the Fiat 635F of the mid 1930s and rests on a 10 metre two-axle Fiat 656RN chassis with a Fiat V.I. engine. It carried 22 seated and 89 in all, with a turning radius reduced to 9 metres. The first examples were delivered to the public transport companies of Genoa, Milan and Cremona. All the vehicles built stayed in service for more than 40 years, and many were later resold to other countries, including Greece. In the Italian city market it competed with the Alfa Romeo 500F, the SPA 34C, the Isotta Fraschini F2 and the Breda MTR290. Besides its success in Italy it was widely exported; in 1939 the Athens transport authority ordered 12 for the first trolleybus line of the city, line 20 to Piraeus, which entered service only 10 years later because of the war.
