Fiat 635R

The Fiat 635R was a range of city, intercity and line buses built by the bus division of Fiat V.I., part of the Italian FIAT group. Like every bus of its day it used a lowered chassis derived from an existing truck, with the engine at the front, an awkward position for boarding and driving. It was nine metres long, the length standardized in Italy, and had right-hand drive, as the Italian highway code then required. The first series carried the same petrol engine as the truck, the Fiat 350, a six cylinder of 5,262 cubic centimetres giving 55 DIN horsepower, which proved reliable but weak, so a second series of 1932 took a 6,220 cubic centimetre petrol engine of the same power with more torque. A third series appeared in 1936 with the Fiat 355 diesel of 8,355 cubic centimetres and 80 horsepower, and a fourth in 1938 with the multipurpose Fiat 255 of 9,972 cubic centimetres. A ten metre urban version was called the 635RNL. Production of the 635RN ended in 1939. The article also describes the Fiat 635F, Fiat's first trolleybus, exported to Timisoara.
