The Fiat 418 is a bus produced from 1971 to 1982, with about 6,900 built. At the start of the 1970s the range of buses offered by Fiat Veicoli Industriali consisted of vehicles designed mostly in the early 1960s, technically obsolete and no longer competitive, so to renew its offer Fiat put into production two new models: the 418, a medium-capacity and very versatile bus, and the 421, designed for large cities. Although deeply renewed in mechanics and styling, the 418 derived closely from its predecessor the Fiat 410, as its dimensions and modest capacity show. The engine is the Fiat 8200.12.035 of 9819 cubic centimetres giving 183 to 194 horsepower, placed in the middle of the frame. Three transmissions were offered, and it was among the first buses with a standard rev counter and with no conductor's seat, replaced by ticket machines. Fiat built it at Cameri, and outside firms such as Menarini, Portesi and Viberti built others.
