Fairey N.4

Flying Boats and Seaplanes

The Fairey N.4 was a five-seat, four-engined long range reconnaissance flying boat built to Admiralty Specification N.4, and when it first flew in 1923 it was the largest flying boat in the world. It was a biplane with its engines mounted as two push-pull pairs between the wings, each driving a four-bladed propeller. Three were ordered: one from the Phoenix Dynamo Manufacturing Company, which was never flown, and two from Fairey, the second of them sub-contracted to Dick, Kerr and Company. That second aircraft, Atalanta, first flew on 4 July 1923, and the improved Mk II, Titania, first flew on 24 July 1925, with trials continuing until 1928.
