Dornier S-Ray 007

Flying Boats and Seaplanes

The Dornier S-Ray 007 is a two-seat amphibious aircraft concept designed by Dornier Technologie. The idea is similar to that of the Dornier Libelle of the 1920s, so the aircraft first carried the name Dornier Libelle, was then renamed Dornier Stingray, and received the name S-Ray 007 before the first example was built. The project is led by Iren Dornier, a grandson of Claude Dornier and the owner of Dornier Technologie. The flying boat is a high-wing aircraft whose one-piece wing is joined by a central support pylon to the fuselage and carries a centrally mounted Rotax 912S engine and propeller. It is built from reinforced plastics with carbon fibre reinforcement, which makes it very resistant to salt water, and has retractable landing gear and two 50 litre fuel tanks. It is 6.75 m long with a 9 m wingspan and an empty weight of 510 kg. The maiden flight took place on 14 July 2007 at Friedrichshafen airport with Gerhard Thalhammer as pilot.
