The Dornier Komet, meaning Comet, and its Merkur, meaning Mercury, development form one 1920s family of single-engine high-wing all-metal monoplanes designed and manufactured by Dornier Flugzeugwerke. They began as landplane versions of the Delphin flying boat and served first as small airliners, with Deutsche Luft Hansa operating about thirty Merkurs at one time and others exported to countries including Brazil, China, Colombia, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the Soviet Union. The family also produced a Do C trainer, a Do D floatplane torpedo bomber for the Yugoslav Royal Navy and the Do T ambulance. The Komet III was also built under licence in Japan by Kawasaki.
