Dornier Do 29

Supersonic and Experimental Aircraft

The Dornier Do 29 was an experimental aircraft developed by Dornier Flugzeugwerke and the German Aviation Laboratory in the 1950s to test a tilting-propeller system for vertical and short take-off and landing aircraft. It was based on the Do 27 light transport but had two Lycoming GO-480 engines below the wings driving pusher propellers that could tilt down by up to 90 degrees, and a helicopter-like cockpit with an ejection seat. Two were built and the first flew on 12 December 1958. It was highly successful, with a stalling speed of 24 km/h, but the system was not developed further, and one prototype survives on display.
