Dornier 228

General Aviation and Light Aircraft

The Dornier 228 is a twin-turboprop STOL utility aircraft designed and first manufactured by Dornier GmbH, later DASA Dornier and Fairchild-Dornier, from 1981 until 1998. About 245 were built at Oberpfaffenhofen in Germany, and Hindustan Aeronautics bought a production licence in 1983 and built 125 at Kanpur in India. The 15-seat and 19-seat versions were first named E-1 and E-2, later the Dornier 228-100 and 228-200, and the larger 228-200 entered service with Jet Charters in late 1982. The Swiss manufacturer RUAG acquired the rights in 2002 and introduced the Dornier 228 NG in 2009 with a five-blade propeller and a glass cockpit, and in 2020 RUAG sold the type to AeroTec Systems, a subsidiary of General Atomics, which announced plans to resume production with a new version called the Do228 NXT.
