De Havilland DH.95 Flamingo

Airliners and Commercial Jet Aircraft

The de Havilland DH.95 Flamingo was a British twin-engined high-wing monoplane airliner first flown on 22 December 1938. It was developed by de Havilland under their newly appointed chief designer R. E. Bishop and was the company's first all-metal stressed-skin aircraft, with only the control surfaces fabric covered. Two Bristol Perseus radial engines drove three-bladed variable-pitch propellers, two pilots sat side by side with a radio operator behind them, and the cabin took 12 to 17 passengers; it had a retractable undercarriage and slotted flaps and was seen as capable of competing with the Douglas DC-3. It received its certificate of airworthiness on 30 June 1939. Jersey Airways ordered three and the Air Ministry and the Egyptian government also ordered aircraft, and during the Second World War some served with the Royal Air Force as transports and on general communications duties. A single military transport version, the DH.95 Hertfordshire, was built.
