The Convair 880 is a narrow-body jet airliner built by Convair, a division of General Dynamics, designed to compete with the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 by offering a smaller but notably faster aircraft, reportedly capable of around 615 miles per hour. Its five-abreast seating and four General Electric turbojet engines made it less economical to operate than Boeing's rival 720, and the type first flew on 27 January 1959 and entered service with Delta Air Lines in 1960. Only 65 aircraft were built between 1959 and 1962 before General Dynamics withdrew from the commercial airliner business, considering the program a commercial failure; the type was fully retired by 1998.
