City of Truro

Steam and Early Locomotives

City of Truro is a British 4-4-0 steam locomotive built in 1903 for the Great Western Railway at its Swindon Works to a design by George Jackson Churchward. It is remembered chiefly for a celebrated run from Plymouth to London Paddington in 1904, during which some observers believed it became the first locomotive to exceed 100 miles per hour, a claim that has been disputed ever since for lack of fully reliable timing evidence.
