The Shaoshan 4, abbreviated SS4, is a type of electric locomotive used on the national railway system of the People's Republic of China. It is an eight-axle heavy freight electric locomotive formed from two four-axle units connected together, with the axle arrangement Bo'Bo'+Bo'Bo', and it takes industrial-frequency single-phase AC power. The Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Works built it and in 1993 produced the SS4G, which is very similar apart from improved electrical technology. Other builders also produced SS4s: the Datong Electric Locomotive Works, the Ziyang Locomotive Works and the Dalian locomotive works. One unit, SS4-0043, was damaged in a tunnel during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and examples are preserved at Taiyuan Locomotive Depot and the China Railway Museum.
