China Railways HXN5

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The HXN5 is the Chinese name of the GE ES59ACi, a diesel-electric locomotive also known as the China Mainline Locomotive, built by GE Transportation and CRRC Qishuyan for freight trains from Harbin to Qiqihar and Mudanjiang in China. In October 2005 China Railway ordered 700 ES59ACi Evolution Series locomotives from the two builders for delivery in 2008 and 2009. Two were built at Erie, Pennsylvania, in 2008, and Qishuyan assembled the rest at Changzhou from 2008 to 2010. The first locomotive made in China was unveiled on 25 November 2008. The initial order was cut from 700 to 300 units actually produced. The locomotive has a GE GEVO-16 engine with an output of 6,250 horsepower, or 4,660 kW.
