The DF, from the Chinese Dongfeng meaning East Wind, was a diesel-electric locomotive used on the national railway of the People's Republic of China from 1958 until production ended in 1974. It was the first common mixed-traffic diesel-electric locomotive in the country and hauled both passenger and freight trains. The design grew from the 1958 Julong prototype, essentially a Soviet TE3 built with Soviet technical help, and used a 10-cylinder opposed-piston engine of type 10E207, itself a copy of a Soviet design that descended from a Fairbanks Morse engine. The DF3 is an upgraded version. Dalian, Qishuyan, Datong and Chengdu all built the type. By the late 1980s models such as the DF4B had displaced it from primary routes, and a few were later sold to industrial and local railways and three went to Vietnam as the D16E.
