Caproni Ca.22

Pioneer and Early Aviation Aircraft

The Caproni Ca.22 was a single-engine monoplane made by Aeronautica Caproni in 1913 as a one-off research machine to study an aircraft with a wing of variable incidence. The wing was in three pieces hinged on the front spar, and a handwheel acting on a helical tube changed the angle; a system of tie-rods moved the rear tail planes to offset the pressure changes and keep the aircraft in longitudinal balance. In 1913 it obtained several world height and ascent records. It was powered by an 80 hp Gnome Lambda rotary engine, and its fixed-incidence derivatives, the Ca.23 and Ca.24, followed, the latter produced in series.
