The Caproni Bergamaschi PL.3 was designed and built in Italy to compete in the 1934 London-to-Melbourne air race. It was a single-engine cantilever monoplane with clean lines, a retractable undercarriage and side-by-side seating for two, and although it was registered as an entrant, late delays kept it from competing. The low wing was built entirely of wood and covered with plywood, tapering in chord and thickness from deep roots to rounded tips, the tail was conventional with the tailplane set at mid-fuselage, and the fuselage was mostly of metal, a tube of constant diameter set by the wide-chord cowling around its licence-built Pratt and Whitney Hornet radial engine of 525 kilowatts. The listed figures are a length of 9.04 metres, a wingspan of 11.89 metres, an empty mass of 1,696 kilograms, a maximum speed of 360 kilometres per hour and a range of 3,098 kilometres.
