A bulk carrier is a merchant ship designed with large unobstructed cargo holds to carry unpackaged bulk cargo such as grain, coal, ore or cement, loaded and unloaded through hatches on the main deck. Developed into its modern form over the twentieth century as shipping shifted toward carrying raw commodities in bulk rather than in sacks or crates, the bulk carrier became one of the most numerous types of large merchant ship afloat, moving the bulk of the world's dry cargo trade.
