British Rail Class 91

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The British Rail Class 91 is an electric locomotive built by British Rail Engineering Limited in the late 1980s for express passenger services on the East Coast Main Line between London and Scotland. Paired with a matching rake of Mark 4 carriages and a streamlined Driving Van Trailer at the opposite end, the combination was marketed as InterCity 225, a name reflecting its designed top speed of 225 kilometers per hour, roughly 140 miles per hour. The Class 91 and its InterCity 225 formation became one of the defining images of British long-distance rail travel through the 1990s and 2000s before gradual replacement by newer high-speed rolling stock.
