The Bristol L was a single deck bus chassis introduced in 1937 to replace the longer J type that had been offered since 1931. It was built by the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company in the period when the Tilling Group had adopted the diesel engine as its standard power unit, and many Bristol chassis were bodied by Eastern Coach Works at Lowestoft. Grace's Guide lists the L type among the principal models of the company's bus range, alongside the B, G, H, J and K. Later single deck designs from Bristol included the Light Saloon introduced in 1952, the MW of 1957 and the rear engined RE of 1962.
