Bristol A

Buses and Road Mass Transit Vehicles

The Bristol A was a four cylinder petrol chassis built by the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company between 1925 and 1928, and it opened the sequential letter system that ran from A to M. Only 23 were made. Most carried double deck bodies by Bristol, Roe or Short, with a few single deck buses and a horsebox, and they went mainly to municipal operators: Kingston upon Hull Corporation took eight, Manchester Corporation six, Doncaster Corporation four and Bath Tramways three, with one kept by Bristol Tramways itself. It was followed in 1926 by the B type, widely known as the Superbus, which was built in far larger numbers.
