A brake, also spelled break, is a large open four-wheeled carriage that came into use in the nineteenth century, originally built plain and unfinished for breaking young horses to harness. From the mid-1800s it was refined into a gentleman-driven carriage with bench seating and a raised driving seat, used for shooting parties, estate outings and, in heavier form, for transporting guests and luggage.
