The Boeing Phantom Eye was an experimental unmanned aircraft built by Boeing Phantom Works to show that a hydrogen-fuelled aeroplane could stay aloft for days at very high altitude. It was conceived as a high altitude, long endurance surveillance and communications platform, a pitch aimed at United States military demand for persistent reconnaissance during the Afghanistan campaign. The demonstrator had a wingspan of about 46 metres and two propellers driven by modified Ford 2.3 litre car engines retuned to burn hydrogen, with turbochargers so they could breathe at around 65,000 feet. After taxi tests at Edwards Air Force Base it made its first flight on 1 June 2012, and its ninth flight in 2014 reached 54,000 feet. No customer ordered a full-size version, and in 2016 the dismantled demonstrator went to the Air Force Flight Test Museum for display.
