Boeing 377 Stratocruiser

Airliners and Commercial Jet Aircraft

The Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was a large, long-range, double-deck propeller airliner developed from the C-97 Stratofreighter military transport, which was itself a derivative of the B-29 Superfortress. It had a pressurized cabin and could carry up to 100 passengers on the main deck, with a lounge on the lower deck. It was larger than the Douglas DC-6 and Lockheed Constellation but cost more to buy and run, and its four 28-cylinder Pratt and Whitney Wasp Major engines and their propellers gave it a poor reliability record. The first flight was on 8 July 1947 and only 55 were built for airlines, along with the prototype.
