The Bell 412 is a twin-turbine utility helicopter of the Huey family, developed from the Bell 212 and distinguished by a composite four-blade main rotor in place of the 212's two-blade rotor. A prototype first flew in August 1979, the initial model was certified in January 1981 and deliveries began that month. The type has been popular in civil and military markets, with major users including Canada, Italy and Japan, and it has been built under license by Agusta in Italy, by Indonesian Aerospace and by Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan. Several hundred have been produced, the 412HP replaced the SP version in 1991, and the 412EP Enhanced Performance is the current production version.
