The Avro 552 was a British light biplane produced in the early 1920s, another attempt by Avro to sell a derivative of the wartime 504 to the civil market. The company used the large number of war-surplus Wolseley Viper engines left from Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a production, first fitting one to a standard 504K airframe in 1921 as the Avro 551, with an extra fuel tank in the upper wing and changed ailerons. That configuration went into production as the 552. The Argentine Navy bought 12 floatplane 552As as trainers and Bulgaria two, and Canadian Vickers built five landplanes and nine seaplanes under licence for the Royal Canadian Air Force for forestry patrol.
