The Avro 536 and its follow-on design, the 546, were developments of the Avro 504 military biplane, marketed for civil use in the years following the First World War and intended principally for joyriding. At Blackpool, 536s flown by three pilots carried about 500 passengers on their first day of operation, and at least one was still giving joyrides on Jersey as late as 1927. A single variant was produced as the Avro 546, with a fully enclosed passenger cabin. The 536 used a 150 hp Bentley BR.1 nine-cylinder air-cooled rotary engine.
