Avro 528

Pioneer and Early Aviation Aircraft

The Avro 528 was an unsuccessful large-span, single-engined biplane built to an Admiralty contract in 1916, and very little is known about it apart from a photograph and a general arrangement drawing. It was a large three-bay biplane with unswept, unstaggered, constant-chord wings of unequal span, the lower plane 10 feet shorter than the upper, and both wings folded for storage. Its Sunbeam engine drove a four-bladed propeller with a single, nearly vertical exhaust pipe, and two radiators sat edge-on between the wings. It carried a Lewis gun in the rear cockpit with provision for bombs in nacelles under the lower wing, and first flew on 19 December 1916 at Avro's Hamble factory.
