Stanley Steamer

Automobiles

The Stanley Steamer is the common name for the steam powered automobiles built by twin brothers Francis and Freelan Stanley through their Stanley Motor Carriage Company, from the 1890s into the 1920s. Propelled by a lightweight steam engine rather than an internal combustion engine, a specially streamlined Stanley racer set a world land speed record on the sands of Ormond Beach, Florida in 1906, a record that stood for years before gasoline powered cars eventually displaced steam cars from the market.

FAQs

Why did steam cars like the Stanley Steamer lose out to gasoline cars?

Better gasoline engines and electric starters made internal combustion cars more popular than the pricier steam car.

In the mid to late 1910s, internal combustion engines offered improved fuel efficiency and power delivery, and electric starters replaced hand cranks, which had been notorious for causing injury. Those changes made the internal combustion automobile more popular than the more expensive steam car.
