ALCO RSD-15

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The ALCO RSD-15 was a diesel-electric locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company at Schenectady, New York, between August 1956 and June 1960, with 75 produced. It was powered by an ALCO 251 16-cylinder four-cycle V-type prime mover rated at 2,400 horsepower and superseded the almost identical ALCO 244 powered RSD-7. It rode on two three-axle Trimount trucks with all axles driven by General Electric 752 traction motors, and could be ordered with a high or low short hood; fans called the low-nose version Alligators. A single similar RSD-17 was built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1957. Five RSD-15s survive in preservation, all former Santa Fe units.
