The ALCO RSC-2 was a diesel-electric road switcher that rode on three-axle trucks in an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement. It was used much like its four-axle counterpart the RS-2, but the extra axle lowered the axle load so it could run on the light rail of branch lines. Ninety-one were produced. The Milwaukee Road took the first deliveries in November 1946 and assigned them to its Valley Division near Wausau, Wisconsin, to study an all-diesel roster, before the units were replaced by the EMD SDL39. ALCO also exported units to Portuguese Railways, which classed them Serie 1500 for the Iberian gauge, and five to Algerian National Railways; five of the Portuguese units still run, and Milwaukee Road 988 is preserved at Mid-Continent Railway.
